Can Nintendo boost 2DS sales using Pokémon X and Y?
Wednesday saw the unexpected announcement of the Nintendo 2DS. The handheld has been heavily criticised for its doorstop shape and hingeless attributes. Does Nintendo have a cunning plan involving, Pokémon X and Y, up their sleeves to boost sales?
The 2DS launches on the 12th of October, which is (ironically?) the same day both Pokémon X and Y gets released. I have a funny suspicion that Nintendo are planning to use the recommend a friend campaign, using Pokémon as an incentive for adults to purchase 2DS’ for their children. Especially in the buildup to Christmas.
Nintendo have dominated the handheld market since….well…they have ALWAYS dominated it! So I am pretty sure they know what they are doing. Even though the 2DS getting critised by masses of people on forums, gaming websites and whatnot, the Japanese giants know there is a market for parents who would like to purchase the 2DS for their children, as it is already well documented that children under the age of 7 are strongly suggested not to play with the 3D turned on on the 3DS, as it could cause harm to their eyes.
Getting back to Pokémon X & Y. If my (I say mine, but it was actually Mark’s guesswork) assumption is correct, Nintendo stand to sell bucketloads of 2DS’ in the month of October. I don’t think anyone should underestimate the popularity of the Pokémon series…..especially the games. Since Pokémon Red launched in Japan on the Game Boy in February 1996 the franchise has sold in excess of of 220 million copies, which makes it the second most popular gaming franchise after Mario.
Do you think Nintendo have a trick up their sleeve to boost sales, or are we just over thinking Please let us know in a comment below.
