Looking Back #02: Alex Kidd in Shinobi World

Remember Alex Kidd? Yeah – the kid with the gigantic hand in Alexx Kidd in Miracle World that came pre-installed on most Master System 2 systems. A lot of people don’t even know he showed up in any other game. In fact, he turned up in another five…actually make that a few more if you include his cameo appearances in Sega Superstars Tennis, Sonic & All-Stars Racing and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Here are the six games in which he plays the protagonist:

  • Alex Kidd  in Miracle World
  • Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars
  • Alex Kidd BMX Trial (Japan only)
  • Alex Kidd: High-Tech World
  • Alex Kidd in the Encharted Castle
  • Alex Kidd in Shinobi World

The game we are going to talk about is the last game where he plays the lead role – Alex Kidd in Shinobi World. As the title suggests, Alex turns up in the world of the classic ninja series. The game loads up and you are greeted with one of the best and quickest story-telling opening sequences of my childhood. Check it out below.

Within that 50 second opening sequence, you are provided with all the information you need till you finish the game. While it is not a bad thing to have a complex and gripping storyline…sometimes it is good to keep everything short and sweet, and allow the player to just jump straight into the thick of it.

In the first few moments of the opening stage, you are able to climb up a lamppost and rotate around it so fast that you turn into a FIREBALL and shoot across the screen. You have to remember this game came out just under 24 years ago, and till today…I still remember how shocked I was the first time I did it. Admittedly, the fireball move is  most probably the best bit about the game.

A majority of the in-game bosses were parodies of their counterparts in the first Shinobi game….which is great if you are a fan of the series. Also, the soundtrack is great. The game is well worth checking out. You are able to download it on both Xbox Live Arcade on the Xbox 360 and Playstation Network on the PS3. Still not convinced, check out the infamous move in the footage below.

awesome game… we played it for hours and hours…. mum shouting up the stairs ‘dinner is ready’ we would say ‘ok in a minute’! then 5 minutes would pass with before we get shouted at.
